If the kiln temperature fluctuates by even a single degree, or if the silver contains a microscopic impurity, the enamel will crack, bubble, or discolor. A single piece must undergo up to 5 to 10 separate firings, layer by layer. If a flaw appears on the final firing, the entire piece is ruined beyond repair. The precious silver must be melted down, and the artisan must start completely from scratch.
